Johnson was known during the Harlem Renaissance for his poems, novels, and anthologies collecting both poetry and spirituals of Black culture. In 1934, he was the first African American professor to be hired at New York University, and later he was a professor of creative literature and writing at Fisk University a historically black university. From 1920 to 1930 he was Executive Secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). consul in Venezuela and then Nicaragua for most of the period from 1906 to 1913. Under President Theodore Roosevelt he was appointed U.S. In 1897 James Weldon Johnson became the first African American admitted to the Florida Bar Exam since the Reconstruction era ended. The music was written by his younger brother, J. James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) is a name we remember today for having written the lyrics for " Lift Every Voice and Sing ” in 1900, which later became known as the Negro National Anthem. This is the first time Oakland GMC has had the opportunity to perform his music. Garrett is the artistic director of the Omaha Symphonic Chorus and founding conductor of the Nebraska Festival Singers. He holds an MM from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a BA from Hampton University. Before earning his PhD in Music Education at Florida State University he was the Director of Choral Activities at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. Garrett is an Assistant Professor of Music.
